Orioles Vs. Blue Jays Series Recap And A Look Into The Future - Ep. 15
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this episode Clay and Jake break down the Blue Jay's series and take a look into their next series with the Mariners.
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. What an intro. I'm your host, Clay Seljan, and this is Oreo's Theory. You're the number one stop shop for Baltimore baseball. With me today, it's not Tyler Barbaras. It's my good friend Jake Oren. It's better. It's better.
SPEAKER_01Better.
SPEAKER_00Tyler's on a flight to Greece. He's uh abandoning us, and uh, you know, it's okay. We can we can show that we can handle this, right, Jake?
SPEAKER_01Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00Jake, you gotta let me know how was your weekend, brother. We'll we'll get into the game. But how how are you?
SPEAKER_01Weekend was long, long, didn't really do much. Um, but honestly, just enjoying the weather, enjoying some family time. Didn't really do anything crazy, but still long. Or, in other words, I mean not long enough. You gotta get right back to the grind here tomorrow, bright and early. So, other than that, you know, watch a little Orioles baseball and just hung out. How about yourself?
SPEAKER_00Pretty much the same. It's been it's been beautiful. Been working on my room a little bit, start working tomorrow, got my alarm set for 6 15 bright and early. I think you gotta get up right around when the rooster crows as well. So, you know, I'm excited. It's been nice hanging around friends and family. Just got done playing basketball about an hour ago, and you know, you know how it is. Brick City, Brick City. Yeah, it was it was pretty ugly, dude. I I feel like I'm not the athlete I used to be. But before I talk about other athletes and other malpractices that we witness today, I have to give a quick shout-out to our friends at O Square Design. O Square Residential Design, look, we know what it takes to build a winning team, and O Square knows what it takes to build winning spaces. They're a women-owned, family-operated company right here in Maryland, specializing in kitchen and bathroom renovations. Whether you're looking to restore, replace, or completely remodel, they deliver excellence in every square inch. Serving homeowners across the state of Maryland. Check them out at osquaresign.com. That's osquaredesign.com. Jake. I'm gonna let you take the floor first. I uh I know we're gonna talk about the um MLB and their umpire issues, and especially you know, focused on today's game where the Orioles got completely hosed. Uh let's take the floor.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, uh, this one was brutal today. Um, I mean, outside of Friday, the whole series was brutal. But this one, up for nothing. I feel like this one, Clay, might be one we talk about down the line. Um, it's it's games like this. You gotta win. It's the series finale. You take the series, leaving, coming home tomorrow. That's crucial. You're up for nothing, you blow it. Look, uh massive defensive error by uh Gunnar Henderson just can't happen from a superstar of that caliber. Um, and it seems to me that it's kind of been happening a lot. Um, just very sloppy. And I mean, the Orioles have enough offense to compete with just about anyone, but sloppy defense is going to repeatedly kill this team in close games that end in losses, and it's happened several times this year, and frankly, it's going to kill us down the line, knowing that even to this day, we are still fighting for a fucking play playoff spot. And I know it's not the vision, but still, like these games matter come September, and it's going to be something that bikes in the ass for sure. And I already know, I already know how this is gonna fucking go. Baltimore had control of this game, had control of the series, they gave away extra out, and it turned into a loss. I I could see it aligning as soon as you know, I was talking, I can even look at it now. I was looking at the stats because I was busy today. I I had softball and I was doing a lot of other things around the house, and and I just really couldn't lock my eyes on a three-hour baseball game right now. But I was keeping tabs, and in my head, I was like, man, dude, Shane Boss, here he is again, just showing up, shoving, just putting the ball back to contact ball to contact, dude. And it was working out perfectly. Look up, it's five four. I was like, Oh shit.
SPEAKER_00Through five innings on 39 pitches. I mean, it was he was cruising. He was cruising and it you know, it bothers me because when we sit here and we think about it, you know, I gotta say, my spiel, I mean, yeah, the gunner error can't happen. Tyler tweeted out today. Tyler said, Would you still pay Gunner 250 million dollars? Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01Uh 250 million, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's gonna be a lot more than that. Right now, yeah, yeah, right now I'd sign the contract. But those things can't happen. I I I think that we all know that. I think obviously Gunner knows that, and he brought that up after the game. But what bothers me more is the MLB's just just total bullshit and and inconsistency when it comes to these calls. You know, you look at that. What happened in the ninth inning with Jackson Holliday? They rolled Jackson Holliday to be out of the baseline when they initially were like right next to each other, he was still in the dirt. I understand he paved out of the way and went into the grass, but you can't have it one way and then let it go the other way, and then after the game, service a shit sandwich and say, Hey, well, you know, he would, you know, the runner established a base path, and and and you know, he would have impeded with Gunner, and the Gunner didn't try and tag him enough. I mean, like Gunner said, he's not gonna run into right field to try and tag him. At the end of the day, he was dead to rights, and at that point, the runner should be out. I mean, it's it's simple. I mean, it's things like that, Jake, and I couldn't agree more when when you talk about things that are gonna come back and bite this team in the ass. It's it's the end division games, the games that you lose like this, where you're in full control, you put up four, you know, you got things going, you know, finally in the middle innings. Then all of a sudden you wet you let that bother you. And and obviously things like that are gonna piss you off and bother you, but it just led to this this this trembling effect of all right, base it here, then the air, and then Jackson Holiday fields that ball with his glove, the leading run, and and and lolly pops it to Pete Alonzo, who then throws a ball the home plate that went about 45 feet before it bounced. You know, I mean, shit like that can't happen. And and you know, it when you're sitting there three games under 500, you're in Toronto, you're trying to win a series. I don't know what else to say. I mean, it's just I'm gonna I'm mad at MOB's officiating and umpiring, it's it's ridiculous.
SPEAKER_01It's absolutely you could be mad, you could be mad about the umpiring.
SPEAKER_00I mean that those the umpires don't decide a baseball game. What decides a baseball game, they shouldn't, and you know, hopefully they don't. And and I'm not taking anything away from how hor horrendous they were today. But what I am gonna take from the fact is that the Orioles shut down and pissed themselves as soon as everything went wrong. You know, I I get Albernaz went out with two outs in the ninth inning and argued, but it was pissed poor and it was too little too late. It should have been at that moment when Shane Ba Shane Boss is pointing at the suck and base umpire saying F no. It should have been at that moment that Craig Alberna should have been out there screaming and throwing his hat and making a fucking scene.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_00We're what are we doing here? But it should be a good thing.
SPEAKER_01No, I mean you you you can't let these these fools, the umpiring crew, determine whether the game or the outcome of a game. I mean, look, not every call is going to be correct. Like we at the end of the end of the day, these guys are human beings too. It's a tough job. I get it. And some of these calls aren't gonna be right, and a couple of them today were not right, but it can't you can't let it get to that point to where you're allowing the umpires every decision being that crucial. You're up for nothing. I mean, defensive errors, sloppiness, it's just it it seemed like we would have reverted back to the earlier in this season Orioles, where it's just a very unfundamentally sound team. 4-0 games, you're anything above 3-0. It's a game you can't lose. You can't lose. And it's baseball, things get crazy. But it just for me as a fan, it's like when you get to a certain point, you gotta fucking win the game, and it's gonna come back to bite us big time. Just wait and see. I can I have that feeling in my fucking gut where it's like I I it looks like we're so back, and we're like a team that is to be reckoned with that people are gonna be looking at their schedules and be like, oh, oras are coming into town, be careful. Now it's just like now we're back to fucking square one. It feels like like it just it's demoralizing, it takes the uh the air out of you, and now we gotta shake it all off and get ready for tomorrow. That's the beauty of baseball, but also it's like let me crash out for a little bit. My god, let me crash out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, yeah. At the end of the day, there's not much else left to be said. We'll talk a little more bit about today's game in a little bit, but I want to start getting into Friday's game. I think the one bright spot of the series, I guess, besides the little intricate things that you could take from yesterday today.
SPEAKER_01Friday was fun. Friday was fun.
SPEAKER_00Friday, Friday was fun to watch. You got out there. We talked about it on Thursday with Tyler. BY came out, he shoved, he did his thing. Yeah, and they were and the bats just kept doing their thing. I mean, it was just everybody was getting on base, and and when you have things like that happening, it's what you expect out of this team. Maybe you don't expect 13 runs a night, but you know, I that's the kind of offense I expect from this team, and that's what they've been showing to be capable of the last two weeks. It was things like today, like today that can't happen. It's things like yesterday that can't happen. I mean, it was they were they were bad in all facets yesterday. So, you know. Let's talk about Friday. What do you think about Friday? We got anything you want to do.
SPEAKER_01I mean, the only thing we really really should be talking about is the performance from our number one overall pick, Allie Rutschman, going four for four, home run, two doubles, five RBIs. I mean, that is what you like to see from a number one overall pick. That's the Adley Rutschman that we know and love. Um, really encouraging signs from there. You know, a healthy Rutschman, I don't know how many times I have to say it, but I'll keep on saying it until he retires. Uh, healthy Rutschman changes this entire lineup and changes this entire team. And it showed on Friday. Uh, not really Saturday and Sunday, but it showed it showed on Friday for sure. Kobe Mayo stayed hot with a two-run home run. Good to see that. Um, it it it feels good to finally you know break out of a game like that, but that's all fine and dandy. It's how you respond to you know, give it an ass whooping. You can't just keel over and die the next day. Now, granted, the team has fight, and I love that out of them. You know, you're down big yesterday, you kind of crawl back, make it interesting in the eighth and ninth inning, couldn't get the job done, loved it, and I was okay with that. You're okay, it's okay to lose one or two. You're not gonna win every game in baseball. But today, uh, yeah, and just leaves a sour taste in your mouth, leaving Toronto. But I I loved Friday, and I really wish that offense could could stay that consistent. Obviously, that's impossible to score 13 runs every game, I feel like, but that's the Baltimore Orioles that we came into this this season kind of expecting out of this squad. And they have the bats to compete with anybody. It's it's just the fundamental stuff, man, the small stuff that is really killing this team. And that's what it just makes a good baseball team, you know, hitting the right cutoffs, you know, you're not bobbling balls, getting out to where it should. It's just it's just those things that good teams that's they ace that shit all the time without even thinking about it. And it's on the back burner because that's just how their bread is the fundamentals of the game are the fundamentals of the game.
SPEAKER_00That's right. You never saw you never saw the bookshow Walter Orioles be fundamentally inefficient. Even 2018 when they were a horrible team, writing was on the wall that year, but they still did the little things right, they still showed up every day, and Buck had these guys somewhat ready to play, even though you know everybody knew it was the end. Wow. Um, you know, I like you said Adler Rutschman four for five or four for four, you know, five RBIs. I mean, it was that's Adley Rutchman. That's the number one pick. That's what you expect from this guy. This is what we expected him to be. I also want to highlight Jeremiah Jackson coming off the bench for Sammy Bisao, delivering two big hits. I mean, that was kind of got things going. Kobe Mayo got things going, hit another home run. I mean, things are things are trending the right way for these guys that have struggled throughout the year. The Kobe Mayo's Jeremiah Jackson seems to be kind of finding his way again. Maybe he's not, you know, gonna be the 280 hitter, but he's finding a way to get on base occasionally and contribute. You know, Leody Taveros finds ways to contribute. Jackson Holiday finds ways to contribute. These guys are all finding ways. Taylor Ward, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01And I'm sorry to cut you off. I on Friday I was watching the game, and me and my my buddy were talking. I didn't know that Leo Taveros is younger than Adley Rutschman.
SPEAKER_00You know what's funny? I was like, I feel like he's been in the league since I was like, and uh I saw that I saw you comment that. I saw I don't know why that comment came across my Instagram notifications, but I saw you said you know people forget Leote's younger than Adley, and I was never knew that. I was like, I knew Adley was like 28, 29. And Leote's 20. I was like, I was like, Leote was with Texas for a while.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's been in the league eight years, but he came when he was 19.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I didn't realize it throws me off.
SPEAKER_01I was like, No way.
SPEAKER_00He was like, Yeah, I looked it up because I looked it up this morning and I was like, Wow, I was like, I I was like Leody Terrace. I remember Memorial Day 20, the Jorge Mateo walk-off when he got hit by a pitch. I remember I was sitting in right field heckling Leody Taveras that day, and he was hitting about 205. I was like, You suck. You suck. Nah, you're one of our horrible root now. Now you're just like, God, you're right. I'm like, you're a best outfielder. I love you. I love that vet presence you bring. That vet presence when you're younger than our captain.
SPEAKER_01Right. That's just crazy. That's just how bad that's that's the funny thing about baseball is all these kids are coming when they're 18.
SPEAKER_00Aaron Judge is 34, 35. People forget Aaron Judge came up at 26 years old. Aaron Judge came up a year uh two young, two years younger than uh Leody Tavares currently is.
SPEAKER_01He's 30. He's bullshittery.
SPEAKER_00Bullshittery is not gonna be going on for that much longer.
SPEAKER_01Holy shit, he's 34. He's 34. Holy shit.
SPEAKER_00He's gonna be rising into a retirement home soon. Oh no, I mean, Brandon Young, six and a third, seven hits, three runs, four K's, no walks. No walks is the biggest thing. All of a sudden, Brandon Young's four and one with a three-four ERA. I mean, that might be your ace. It sure as hell has looked like it. I'll tell you that. I mean, you need to get another one, but he's pitching like he's sure as hell pitching like a one, and I don't think he's a one, but you know, Brandon Young's he's can he's doing his part. Shane Boss today did his part for five innings, it was just a one-up inning.
SPEAKER_01Five innings, and I was just about I was gonna say something so nice on Twitter about him because I haven't been tweeting much, and I was gonna that's I was gonna slide in there with a nice healthy shuck sucking on those Shane Boz, but it blew up before I could even send it. Thank god I didn't look like a fucking fool. A fool. A fool, you are it's now and I didn't really watch much of the game, unfortunately. I was just watching it on like just updates on my phone. What happened in that sixth inning? Uh take away the errors. Is is it just getting barreled up at that point? Was he just getting popped?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, it was it was hard base hits, ground balls. I mean, you had the air, and then you had the the play with the air, obviously killed you get out, you get out of the way. Soft grounder, you know, with gunner, it bobbles that. Then you have the double play that didn't end up happening, then you have a hard hit ball to the left scores a run, then he gets beat by soft contact, the holiday play that the leading run scored with Kano in. You know, I mean, it was just little, it was little stuff that added up, and you know, things that can't happen. It was it was getting beat, you know. You you live by the sword, die by the blade, and the Orioles today in the sixth inning died by the blade. I mean, it was you know, things didn't go your way, and you bitched and cried and moaned instead of trying to fight back into the game. You get two guys on, you get two guys on to start the next inning. Blaze Alexander lays down a bunt, which good. I'm happy he bunted it, didn't go far enough. But why was Tyler O'Neal? Why it was a terrible bunt, but why was Tyler O'Neal not way farther off second base? You have the third baseman and first baseman crashing in. You watch the replay, shortstop's going to cover third base, knowing that's his assignment. There's nobody holding second base because you know the second baseman's crashing to first base to cover on the button.
SPEAKER_01So then he hit into a double play right after that, ending innings.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there was no reason that Tyler O'Neal shouldn't have had an extended lead, and then when he got a lead after the ball is you know being thrown.
SPEAKER_01Where the hell is my boy Tommy Fam at?
SPEAKER_00Where is he at?
SPEAKER_01He had a grand slam today because I I know he did. I tell you what, Tommy Fam might have ran out to second base and probably choked out this umpire. That's what I'm saying. Maybe his bat's not hot right now, but you know, Tommy all on that on that on that dirt walking over the line, being like, That ain't the right call. That's what we need. That is I don't even care about the bat at that point, dude.
SPEAKER_00I don't, I mean, we just employed Weston Wilson.
SPEAKER_01He can throw hands, he has we a hatred about him. It's something about it. He's all he's pissed all the time. I love it.
SPEAKER_00He always looks like it's like that, it's like that clip where that guy is in court. He's like, he's like, you know, my girlfriend's always angry, and he's like, Good morning. Well, it's going about the morning. That's Tommy Fan. And then Tommy, we need Tommy Fan. We employed Weston Wilson. Sam Huff's Sam Huff's probably gonna be on this roster. I bet you Bisayo probably goes on the on the disabled list. Wasn't he playing today? Yeah, but then he hurt his wrist on that on that plate at home plate and he got pulled.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, my backs so that's a crucial thing. If you watch the game, you miss a couple of these small things.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, would it shock me if Sam Bisa's on the on the disabled list for two weeks? No, Sam Huff stays all of a sudden the roster spot opens. That's Tommy Pham. I mean, we're gonna transition after we talk about Saturday's game because I think we've talked about today enough, and I I don't want to get angrier. We're gonna talk about Saturday a little bit, but we're gonna talk about Tyler O'Trash and and why he should be gone. I you know, but I say we move into Saturday, we talk about Kyle Braddish, four innings, nine hits, five runs, three walks, three Ks, and a homer. Kyle Braddish looked like the Kyle Bradish of April and May. Well, yeah, the first half of May.
SPEAKER_01I mean a little bit too much over the plate.
SPEAKER_00A little too much over the plate, throwing too many pitches. I mean, 81 pitches through four innings, that just can't happen. Can't walk three guys. I mean, it's just a lot of three-two counts. The Blue Jays were working counts and they got to him. Keegan Aiken comes in and gives up a run, two hits, two innings, covers a couple innings, but I mean, things like that can't happen. Shout out Bert for covering the back end and saving the pen, but I don't know. I just so angering. You know, Pete all Pete Alonso hit a homer off Jeff Hoffman. Fuck Jeff Hoffman. Sorry for my language, but hate that guy. Um, that was a good thing. Jeff Hoffman got heavily booed running out of the uh bullpen and then proceeded to give up a apo Taco to Pete Alonso.
SPEAKER_01So I don't hate watcher often, but he's on that list.
SPEAKER_00Three for four Adley 0 for four kind of evens out from his Friday. Kobe Mayo 0 for 4. The Orioles struck out 12 times yesterday. Like I've said all day. You strike out, you strike out double digit times in a game, you're not gonna win the ball game. So it just can't happen.
SPEAKER_01And they wanted to at the end there, they wanted to win it, but like you say, too little too late.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, Colton Kowser, shout out Colton Kowser, back-to-back days with homers. Colton Kowser seems to have finally figured it out. Colton Kowser's gotten his batting average up to uh what's MLB gonna tell me it is? It's uh 244.
SPEAKER_01244. I know he's got a higher OPS than Gunner right now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, Colton Kowser in the last two weeks has turned his entire season around, just like uh Cedric Mullins did uh coming out of May a couple years ago. So, you know, it's it's it's give or take. It's it's good to see Colton Kowser finally figuring it out and finally being the first round pick we expected him to be.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, see, but I never got that like that craze that goes on these days with sports. It's like the kid has a is a in a slump for the first couple weeks of a season and you just want to throw away his entire career because the kid can't hit. Give him some time. Like it's all with all these athletes, like it's not an easy like baseball ain't that easy. So, you know, some things you can be it can't be excused, like the error today by Gunner, but some of this stuff that people are absolutely going for these guys' heads, it's like let him pan out a little bit, let him get some momentum, let him get some consistent at bats, he then we'll see how it goes. And Colton has kind of gotten his groove back a little bit, which is great to see. Great to see, Jakey.
SPEAKER_00Think about it. Last 15 games, Gunner uh not Gunner, Colton Cows are sitting 359, 422 on base percentage. Last seven games hitting 400 with a 458 on base percentage. He's got last 15 games, he struck out eight times and he has five walks. Last seven games, he has three walks and four strikeouts. Kid's hot. He's figuring it out. He's hot. I don't expect him to stay this hot the rest of the year. The kid's hot, but you know, this is this is what you like to see. This is what inspires these other guys. Kobe Mayo doing the same thing. These young guys are finally starting to really put it together.
SPEAKER_01So man, the the vibe of this episode would have been so absolutely off the charts if we won today. My god, dude. It's like I don't it's like they don't even deserve my fucking oxygen right now to even breathe and talk about a disaster class this weekend was outside of Friday. I mean, I'm literally like taking the time out of my day to discuss your shit. And like it just, it just infuriates me. I'm getting all hot and sweaty, hot and bothered right now. I'm not having a good time right now, Clay. I'm not having a good time.
SPEAKER_00No, I I'm not either. And I I I think it's tough. I think, you know, I think that's the one thing about show business is we gotta show up, but you know, just like the just like the Orioles. They have to show up sometimes. They don't, but you know, sometimes we got to sit through it. And yeah, as we told Tyler, I didn't want to record tonight. I mean, after after that shitty of a loss, dude, I did not want I didn't want to come home from playing basketball and shower. I mean, I wanted to do that, but I didn't want to sit down and have to talk about this team for 40 minutes, knowing how angry I am that we should have been leaving Toronto taking two out of three and going on to play Seattle this week. No, I didn't want that. I you I was at the grocery store in the fifth inning, and we were up four-nothing, and I was like, all right, hell yeah, or sixth inning, hell yeah, we're up for nothing. Like this is great. I said this is gonna be a great weekend. We went up to Toronto, took two out of three. You could throw away the bad game we had Saturday. All of a sudden, we're going home for four with Toronto. You know, Trey Gibson probably starts tomorrow, and you know, things are great, but all of a sudden, now we're sitting here, and and it's not the worst loss of the year, it's a horrible loss, but you know, there's about 10 10 games this year I can think of that were worse, including when you blew the 5-0 lead to Toronto last week. You know, it's just it's every week with this team that there's a new bad bad worst loss of the year, a new this was the worst thing that could have possibly happened. And this will be one upped in a week or two. I mean, we got we got seven games coming up against Seattle, three against the Padgers who are slumping. Then we gotta go to LA and spend our Father's Day weekend getting scolded, you know, what did by the Dodgers.
SPEAKER_01So let's it's a long way away. Let's summer down now, kid. We don't know what's gonna happen here in the next week or so. Team could shove this series away, get a little hot, doubt that happens. Prove us wrong. Prove us wrong. Yeah, because I love to be proved wrong, Clay. Because one thing about me is my mouth gets me in trouble.
SPEAKER_00It does in everyday life. I'm sure Tyler's gonna have a long talk with those expertise.
SPEAKER_01Because I say what's on my mind, and uh sometimes what's on my mind probably isn't the best thing to say out loud. The O's get a lot of that, they get a lot of like, I'm saying what's on my mind, and it's probably not like overall the best thing to say right now because I might look foolish in a couple days, but that's how I'm feeling. And I feel like this whole season has just been shit talking to the O's and waiting to be proved wrong, waiting, wanting. There's no one in the entire world that wants a World Series more than Daddy. Seriously, I'll cry. I'll cry. I'll cry.
SPEAKER_00I had tears in my eyes when we won the division.
SPEAKER_01But like, I'm not fucking unrealistic, like I'm kind of a realist. Like, is this team good enough to win a World Series this year? Probably not. Probably not, but like, don't get me wrong, I've seen crazier things happen. The Nationals went on that run, you know. Detroit last year, they started off great, then fell off. It's like, dude, baseball, that's what the blue that's the beauty thing about baseball. But I'm just tired of shit talking to you guys. Prove me wrong because, like, that last couple podcasts, I've been saying some nice things. I've been, you know, getting that momentum, getting that that that love, that that warm feeling in my gut that oh god, like can't wait for tonight's game. And now it's gone.
SPEAKER_00It it it it's it's that warm feeling these last two weeks. I've been so excited to watch the games, and then all of a sudden it just it sucks again. It it it bothers me that and I and like you said, I don't like shit talking Orioles. This isn't fun for me. The last two months have not been fun. You know how much I would love for this team to be 10 games over 500 and be sitting here gloating and talking shit on Twitter and and and and being able to stand on it. I can't. They haven't done they haven't done anything for me to be able to do that. So, you know, when I'm sitting here, you know, angry, it bothers me, and it bothers me that that they don't they they care, but it doesn't nothing gets fixed.
SPEAKER_01You know, they had a great two weeks, but you know, you know, but you see, everything that we're talking about right now, our feelings, our frustrations, that could all be negated come 635 tomorrow.
SPEAKER_00I mean, if you start, you know, yeah, but and that's the thing, that's the thing, they have to come out and win tomorrow.
SPEAKER_01Tomorrow, but you gotta take three out of four.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Coming at home, I don't want to take three out of four, you gotta win two out of three every series, and that's what bothers me about today. If you would have won yesterday, today would have been like, all right, you know how badly today sucked, but hey, it sucks, but like two out of three, right?
SPEAKER_01We still won the series, we're still stacking series win, which is basically the objective. Is at least that's what I like to tell myself is just you keep stacking series win, you win series, you're gonna win the world series. That's kind of how it works.
SPEAKER_00It's a whole season of series, but they gotta come out tomorrow. I mean, you know, last last thought on it. Yeah, I mean, last thought on it. We gotta come out and win tomorrow. Um, you know, you gotta you gotta show that you can put the past in the past and move on to the to the current and win tomorrow. So, you know, with that said, I I I do have to give a quick shout out to our good friends at O Square Design. You know, unlike them or unlike the Orioles, they never seem to amaze me. They always do things right. O Square Residential Design always hits it out of the park, unlike our next topic, Tyler O'Neill. Whether it's kitchen or bathroom renovations, whether you need to restore, replace, or remodel, they've got Maryland covered. Check them out once again at osquedesign.com. Jake, let's talk about Tyler O'Neill, or as uh we have labeled Tyler O Trash. Um you got a hit today. Um, so congratulations. I guess a blind squirrel has to find a nut every once in a while. But what are your thoughts? I mean, 16 million dollars a year, Tommy Phan sitting and waiting, he has to be up within the next five days. Do we see Tyler O'Neill finally get the boot from this team? Does it bring some sort of motivation? So I'll say this.
SPEAKER_01Was that two years ago when we signed him that three-year deal? I was kind of excited about that. He was just coming off a uh a year in Boston where you know maybe the monster helped him out a little bit, but hit 30 plus bombs. I was excited. You know, I mean, you know, I didn't really expect expect him to be a world beater or a superstar, but a guy that you can plug in the lower half of the lineup and trust that he's gonna get you 25, 30 home runs. How stupid and naive of me to think that a free agency pickup of that caliber would have come out to be someone that I can rely on. No, 34 games this year, he's batting 161, two home runs, eight RBIs. I mean, he's striking out two more times than he's than he's walked. He has 12 walks and almost 30 strikeouts. So, I mean, this is something that I I don't understand why he's still on the roster. I kind of I get to a degree of you know, probably a great guy. You've already put the money into him, so you might as well have him on the team. That's malpractice. That's something that should get you fired. Um every other team would have shipped him off probably mid-last year.
SPEAKER_00And think about this. Think about this for a second. Tyler O'Neill, we're we're paying, we're gonna have to pay him regardless. Right now, we're paying him to hold this team back, and and I think that the argument that I want to get in on Twitter with people and people sitting there saying, you know what, Tyler O'Neill will we gotta pay him anyway. Why would we cut him this and that? Like, we still have to pay him. I'd rather I you cut your losses, is a net positive at the end of the day. I'd rather pay him to not be here and be somewhere else. I don't care where. He could he could he could go to Oakland and or Sacramento or do whatever. I don't care. He is he just can't be here. The problem with him being here is he's taking up a roster spot that's valuable, you know. I yeah, Weston Wilson got cut, and I don't I didn't think Weston Wilson deserved to be on the roster, but because there's a 16 million dollar price tag difference, Weston Wilson was sent on his way because we needed a backup catcher there in case Samuel Bissau got hurt, and lo and behold, Sam Huff's here, but and Sam Bisao's hurt. So, you know, it's things like that that the Orioles, you know, they it's the analytics, it's the well, we're paying them anyway. We might as well try and try and squeeze, you know, try and make him you know what he used to be, or try and make and make him be somewhat of a resemblance of a major league baseball player. It's the Orioles always try and outsmart themselves. This team has had multiple guys have to go Jackson Holiday to his dad, Colton Cows are getting his old hitting coach. These guys are going out of the organization to bring in, you know, to work with them on their hitting. Can we fully expect Tyler O'Neal to, you know, the guy we're playing seven, sixteen, seventeen million dollars a year to just become this, you know, work with these guys and figure it out when we're we're a year and a half in. And and whether Tyler O'Neill played 50 or 60, whatever the hell many games he played last year, he's played 30 games this year, and he's been horrible.
SPEAKER_01He's been absolutely great, great for the fucking arms on that.
SPEAKER_00I'm I'm jealous of his arms, but when you're not winning, I mean, you know, winning, you know, when you're not winning and he's not doing good things, you gotta cut bait. You know, you know, Michael Ias's favorite movie is probably Moneyball.
SPEAKER_01He probably sits in JO's to it every day, but it's honestly a great movie, but the ending it's like if you if you if you watch the movie through and through, you would know that it that doesn't work out that well, Bob. And it doesn't really, it's not all rainbows and sun at the end of the movie.
SPEAKER_00I literally think that I think Michael Elias turns the movie off Scott Hatterberg. He falls asleep, or when Scott Hadterberg hits the homework.
SPEAKER_01That's what I want to end off of right there. That's what I want my team to be. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, it's like like I when I think of Michael Eyes and Tyler O'Neill, I think of the scene with David Justice when they're in the cage.
SPEAKER_01And you are now I'm playing, or not, I'm not paying for the player you used to be. I'm playing for you, I'm paying the player you are now.
SPEAKER_00The Yankees seeing what the Yankees think about you, they're paying half your salary.
SPEAKER_01Just to not be there on the team.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like and like Michael Ias probably sits there watching that and he's like, nobody else, I'm not letting someone else take this guy and making him successful. He's mine. I paid him this. It's like, dude, O'Neill's successful in St.
SPEAKER_01Louis. I mean, he's been successful.
SPEAKER_00I mean, he's he's been successful every other year.
SPEAKER_01He's had a good career. Let's end the Baltimore tenure, but he's had a solid career. All right, he's a millionaire, sure he's got a great set of arms.
SPEAKER_00He's running 31 and been too.
SPEAKER_01He's from Canada, so I mean he's already got one, you know, struggle in his life. I let's not keep this whole thing going.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, uh, I mean, it's just I I think, Jake, I think that the Orioles gotta let it go. Uh, you know, Tyler O'Neill, he's sucked. He's been probably he's been the worst signing in Michael Ias's tenure by far. I think probably one of the worst signings in this century for the Orioles. You know, Chris Davis was a staple, and I can forget, I can forget about Chris Davis' contract. Yeah, it was an overpay, but then it didn't work out. But Chris Davis was a staple for the community. That guy was a hero. That guy was a hero in my childhood, so I can forget that. Tyler O'Neill is an outsider, he ain't one of us.
SPEAKER_01If Chris Davis walked in this room right now, I'd kiss him on the mouth. Watch me.
SPEAKER_00What's June? I I I agree. Oh, that is right. Happy Pride Month. Happy Pride Month. Um, you know, I I I think that Tyler O'Neill just it ain't working. Uh you know, I experiments over. If somebody else will pick them up once, once especially when we're paying them, but you know, they won't have the responsibility that we have to pay them. And unfortunately, if the Orioles plan is for the next year and a half to keep rostering them thinking it's gonna work out, I I see the future. I think we all do.
SPEAKER_01The writing's, yeah. I totally agree. You know what Tyler reminds me of? He's probably a great guy. Have never talked to him personally, but he's probably a great guy. He reminds me of like when you have like your little friend group when you were young, and like the weird kid comes over and his mom like pulls you aside, and he's like, Hey, like we just moved in town, kid's a little weird. Why don't you take them under your wing, hang out with them a little bit? Okay, so like we don't really want him here, but we feel bad, so let's keep him around.
SPEAKER_00But then you forget that he's making sixteen million dollars, and it's like, what are we doing? I what this isn't the weird kid. This isn't this isn't the weird kid that moved into town. This is this is the weird kid that moved into town, but hey, he's got a lot of money. Yeah, the kid's rich, so we want to hang out. This kid's got five thousand square feet of basement. Whoa, we've got a pool. It's like going to Fregley's house because he's got good snacks.
SPEAKER_01Like, look, it's it's the experiment's over. I'm tired of it. I'm done with him. Uh, gimme Tommy Fam, who even if he sucks, at least he'll go out and punch him in the face. Like, that's all I really care about. But what Tyler O'Neill, Tyler O'Neill is using those muscles for nothing. What are they for for for show? For the women, the women don't like that. They like a funny guy, funny guy. They like funny personality, good, you know, good head on their shoulders. Tyler O'Neill needs to go and just fucking rock somebody, and then I'll be like, you know what? He can stay. Tyler O'Neill and Tommy.
SPEAKER_00Tyler O'Neill and Tommy Fam got in a fight.
unknownI think.
SPEAKER_01Tommy Fam's kicking his ass. Tommy Fam's kicking his ass.
SPEAKER_00Those are those are show muscles. Those are show muscles. You know, Tommy has real strength. Whether they're fighting at the ballpark or you know, whether they're fighting in a kitchen or bathroom, the guys we're gonna call are O Square Design to repair that bathroom or kitchen. Last, you know, last we checked O Square Design Residential, O Square Residential Design. Whether it's kitchen or the uh or the bathroom, they're gonna fix it. They're renovating. They're whether you need to restore, replace, or remodel. They've got Maryland covered, they've got Tyler O'Neill covered, and they got Tommy Fam covered. Check them out at OSquaredesign.com. That is osquaredesign.com. We're gonna move into our final topic.
SPEAKER_01Big series coming up. Big, big series coming up. This is big.
SPEAKER_00We got the 34 and 32 Seattle Mariners coming into town for four games. We're gonna talk about Monday first. We're gonna talk about Emerson Hancock, University of Georgia Bulldog. Go Dogs. Uh four and two with a 2.8 ERA coming in to face Baltimore's starting pitcher of T B and D. It's either gonna be Chris Bassett or probably Trey Gibson.
unknownProbably.
SPEAKER_00Usually. But uh yeah, so uh obviously tomorrow we don't know yet whether it's Bassett or or Trey Gibson. I'm I'm kind of and my hope is it's Trey Gibson. Um but we'll see. I I think that uh I think tomorrow can go out either way. I think no matter who start, this team knows that they gotta come out angry and win this game and make up for today. You gotta go out and take three out of four. You know, hell, if you sweep this series, you can forget about Sunday and chalk it up with three out of four and two out of three.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, I mean that's a good point. Like, I'm not, I mean, sweeping four-game series is definitely hard. Um I'm cool with three out of two. It's really I'm not so much focused on all the analytical stuff that's coming in with this series, you know, matchups, all that stuff. It's really like almost two things for me is can the Orioles offense stay hot? Because you'll be you'll you're against Woo. Kirby's Kirby's also scheduled to pitch. Those are two, those are two flamethrowers.
SPEAKER_00So the SBN Thursday night. I didn't realize that.
SPEAKER_01Jesus.
SPEAKER_00Great.
SPEAKER_01That's a blowout. Um Tuesday, so Tuesday.
SPEAKER_00Uh Tuesday we'll get Logan Gilbert versus Trevor Rogers. Trevor Rogers is seemed to have kind of back a little bit.
SPEAKER_01It's just one, it's one start. It's one start. Relax.
unknownRelax.
SPEAKER_00I mean, the game that we blew against the Blue Jays last week, Rogers was great until that seventh inning. And he got left in way too long. Yeah, it sucks. But Rogers did shove for six innings, just like Shane Bosch of today for five. Um, gotta try and make take positives out of it, I guess, and maybe it'll figure out.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. Yeah, I mean, I'm Logan Gilbert.
SPEAKER_00You know, Logan Gilbert four and four, three, seven, ninety RA. That's the one thing we we know Seattle can do, is and that's pitch.
SPEAKER_01And that's why it's crucial for for this uh offense to stay hot. And the other thing is can this defense rebound and start playing some better fundamental ball out there? I mean, all nine guys, all of them. So, I mean, we know the Seattle team's gonna be tough. They always are tough. I mean, we play them nose to nose. Um, their pitching is going to be a problem, and it's gonna really hinder on the offense if they can lead this game or this whole entire series. Matter of fact, it's it and I really hope they can stay hot, but we'll see. Obviously, we'll see. It's it's a big series. I I need three out of four at least. Three out of four at least. Half to. At least I know this, I know this AL is dog water, and I know that we'll be in the thick of things even if we lose this series, but God, I'm a slut for momentum, and this is something.
SPEAKER_00Man, two out of three in Toronto would have been huge. I'm off of it now.
SPEAKER_01You know what? I'm I'm off of it now. I've let's move on. I've made it a mental note. I don't even know. I didn't even think I don't even remember them playing today. That's how I'm looking at it. They didn't even play today.
SPEAKER_00Off day. I wish, I wish I could off.
SPEAKER_01Off day. That's what I've decided. It was an off day today, so back at it again tomorrow.
SPEAKER_00Wednesday Wednesday, Wednesday. You're gonna be there. Jake will be there. I'll be there Monday and Wednesday.
SPEAKER_01Meet the people. No, no one come up to me. I'm kidding.
SPEAKER_00I'm kidding. Jake's a friendly guy. If you guys ever want to get Taco Bell with him in Canton, he will probably oblige.
SPEAKER_01Dude, I love Taco Bell. It was right through me, but that for that first 15 minutes, Bubba. Top tier. Top tier, S tier.
SPEAKER_00Especially that cheesy gordita. But moving on, Wednesday. It's Battle of the Birds, Battle of the Aces. You got George Kirby versus BY, the ace of this Baltimore Orioles staff, in my humble opinion as of this moment. Brandon Young, Wednesday, gotta be a win. You gotta go out there and shove. One thing Seattle has struggled to do is hit. Brandon Young has struggled to uh be beat. So sounds like a good combination, but George Kirby's got a hell of a repertoire, whether he's got a five five and five with a four ERA isn't representative of the pitcher he is. Oriol's gotta come ready to play all four games. I we can sit here and break down all these games, but and we will, but it's the same message. I mean, they they got their four best starters going out there. You gotta go out there and win. Just gotta go out there and win. You know, it's the same, it's the same broken down message we've said for the last month now. You got the starters gotta go deep. We gotta put bats on early and get into the bullpen's of these teams. If they don't do that, then I don't know what to tell you.
SPEAKER_01Dude, this this series feels like a it almost feels like an important journal stick, honestly. It's like we're trying to climb Seattle.
SPEAKER_00If we if if if we if we lose three of four in this series, we're gonna be 32 and 38, six games under, and then turn around and have San Diego come back in. Exactly.
SPEAKER_01And that's what I hate.
SPEAKER_00That's the problem. They're due. I hate playing teams that are doing.
SPEAKER_01I'd rather them have fucking nine straight wins. I mean, there's so due. I mean, and my boy, Manny Machado, is gonna come back to Baltimore, absolutely shove it down our throats.
SPEAKER_00I already know what's gonna happen, and then it's gonna be like, well, love, love, manny. But 31 and 35, you take two out of four, you're 33 and 37, and you stay stagnant. That's why it was when it's important, it was so important today. You stay three games under, but you take three out of four, all of a sudden, 34 and 36, two games under, and you could all of a sudden come into the weekend and and you know, probably end the weekend one under. Then all of a sudden, I think we got Seattle. I want to say next week again. If not mistaken, yep, we fly out, we start Monday off and Tuesday in Seattle. You know, it's it's the same, it's rinse and repeat, but I mean it's gonna be tough. I mean, we we've had success in the last few years in Seattle. Just gotta keep riding on it. You know, it's it's gonna be the next two weeks, they're gonna not to be crazy, but they're gonna decide this season. You got seven against Seattle, three against San Diego, three against the Dodgers, then you get the Angels, which that's a break, but you still gotta go there and win. You still gotta play Oriole baseball. It's still baseball. Anything can happen any any given day, any given moment.
SPEAKER_01Man, dude, man.
SPEAKER_00I hope I sure as hell hope we get to play Grayson. I sure as should hope we get to play Grayson.
SPEAKER_01That would be great. Is that series in Anaheim?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we played three in LA.
SPEAKER_01Not Anaheim anymore, excuse me, Los Angeles.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we uh we play three against the Doyers and then the Angels and then Oh, obviously it would be there.
SPEAKER_01We're already in LA might stay there.
SPEAKER_00Then we come home play the Nationals that weekend. So, you know, it's it's uh they just crushed us. It's it's yeah. I mean, you get the Angels and Nationals at the end of the month. That's I mean, the Nationals crushed us.
SPEAKER_01That's crazy you just said that because here in in a couple weeks we could be talking about something completely different. Maybe, maybe we're stalker we're talking about playoffs, or maybe we're we could be 100 when it's the Ravens season start.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we be 10 under talking about getting the ravens going or we could be we could be three ahead three above water going into that angels and uh national series like you know what we made it out of the toughest stretch let's get it let's get to eight before the all-star break and then let's get to 12 over before the end of July and then you know let's trade for a number one let's go do this and then these two right like Michael Waka right yeah the yeah the ace Michael Walka um I don't know man I mean these two weeks are the the most two most important two more most important weeks of this season are gonna be when Tyler's in Greece he uh he decided to be four thousand miles away from the nonsense that the Orioles have provoked on us and the kid just graduated college let him go yeah we gotta give the kid a standing oh he's graduated college he's going out to the homeland the motherland of Greece Tyler you get a standing ovation from your best buddies over here oh I didn't stand I stayed sitting let's make that yeah it was a sitting ovation we're we're gonna pretend we stand it and you know but I don't want you guys seeing my fat little gut on this uh good for him good for Tyler I think that's gonna wrap up today's episode Jake i uh this is our first time doing this uh together just you and I I thought it went well you know I think I think it went a little maybe a little off the wall more than normal I think that was just the temper the temperature of today's game I think it's something that uh yeah unfortunately just it's it's hard to keep me and you in line when things are going south in Baltimore.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Look and honestly uh well I probably would take it in my shirt off midway through the the podcast we've done some crazy shit I don't know what I would have done we might have sat here for an hour just dude they'll never know the people will never know what I would have done because we didn't win. So keep on dreaming about this body because you ain't gonna see it until that World Series wins. Then we'll go. But yeah no I think I was I thought it was good and I'm just really excited to uh get to the get to back to Cannon tomorrow and uh hopefully uh start a a new win streak here um because you know uh all jokes aside baseball is a long season and I know we can sit here and go back and forth about how oh the O's stink the O's lost today look you even the best teams lose 60 games so um a lot of season I always say Jake you you win 54 you lose fifty four it's what you do with the other fifty four and that's the beauty of baseball baseball is kind of kind of a look on life in a sense you know it's it's it's a long season you're gonna have your ups you're gonna have your downs and yeah I mean teams like the Rockies are mostly gonna have downs but you know I mean at the shot at the shot at Colorado that probably didn't need to be said but I love where your head's at I love where your I mean we're Orioles fans so it's not like we've had we've been through it the utmost for like success.
SPEAKER_00So we we've been through it 41 or 43 years.
SPEAKER_01So and and frankly it's one of those things where like I probably should have called child protective services on my father back when I was a kid for growing me up to be an Orioles fan. I think that's child abuse as is so probably should have made that call never did um probably too late now uh seeing as how I am not a child anymore but it still hurts every day being a Nose fan but I wouldn't change it for the world I wouldn't change it for the world for the world uh this I know when to win it all it's gonna be it's gonna feel so good dude it's gonna it's gonna some teams can win four or five and they get used to it I'll take one that's why I'm like I'll take one that means so much to me that and then I'm I'm good I'm good good for the rest of my life that's all I want to see is just one and now the Ravens I want a couple out of them but if the Orioles get one I've already I've already seen one with the Ravens I want another though I want to see how I'll get it yeah obviously but like yeah I I was young though I mean I was I was I was 10 years old I want to I want to experience something as an adult oh damn I mean I wasn't an adult when we won in 2012 but I was certainly remember everything that happened I remember it I remember the year I remember that but I'm still young I mean it was you know I don't know here's a quick little question would you rather have an Orioles World series now or a Ravens Super Bowl right now like this season coming up for both of them because you only can choose one fuck dude I mean that's even having I don't know even having to think about it just stop even having to think about it come on I I think the Orioles I I mean an Orioles would mean the world to me I think I've I tell people all the time if the Orioles won the world series it would mean more to me than my own marriage me having kids which is I don't know if I would put that on the internet because that will come back to bite you in the long run I feel like probably but hey shit when I spend two thousand dollars to be sitting behind a home plate for the Orioles World Series 2000 bump that up a couple bump that up a couple I'm not sitting in the chills club I was talking about it ain't gonna be 2000 it ain't gonna be more than that it ain't gonna be like say I don't know man I think Lamar's gonna Lamar's gonna win one in the next couple years not right behind home plate I'm not sitting row one seat one I'm not sitting down there with Ruby but I I'll be down there with Ruby nah Ruby's in his fucking bitch ass suite up there with his all his friends hanging out laughing I'm sitting around laughing we're getting our we're getting our ass kicked and they're laughing having drinks I'm like dude the fuck's going on right now david what the fuck out of your ass it's eight eight to one and Mike Elias is in Towson drinking dude oh there was a story of long ago where I was I was at the game and it was seven to one and Mike kept walking up right past us because I was dude I chased him down the aisle once because he apparently like I was no it was it was a game me and Kelsey and then as soon as the game ended he didn't come up front or pass the fans nah na no motherfucker went under with the umpires I'm like because you and I you and I literally went to the concourse and chased the music Mike like that's elevator he went up that way he had an elevator ready for him so even when we tried to catch up to him he was already in elevator oh yeah he gone dude that doors closed he's a pussy and drinking coke zeroes should be fired immediately fired immediately fired who that's all right well real quick felt good that's a turn that did that felt like though I do now I'm ready for Mara out today now I'm ready for Mara let's go have it serious I want to think all I want to thank everyone that's been tuned in today for this episode it's been a special inaugural episode of Clay and Jake just spewing nonsense for 50 minutes and 15 seconds I had fun we hope you enjoyed though it was it was it wasn't pretty but as John Harbaugh would say it was us it was so as you guys know you can find O'Stheory on all platforms we finally have the YouTube up follow us on Twitter Instagram you can find us on Spotify and Apple Podcast I guess that's what their app is not like Apple music it's apple podcast apple podcast yeah but thank you guys once again we want to give a shout out to O Square Design thank you for continuing to sponsor us and I I think Jake that'll wrap it up uh I think we will see you guys Thursday be on the lookout for clips and content all over social media and uh and hope to think it'll be guys live yeah hope to see you guys at the yard and I think you guys will see me and Jake's pretty faces Thursday night. Yeah so Jake any closing words we recapping no nope everyone have a great Monday great start of the week and as always go oh's go o's from Clay Selgen and Jake Oran you guys have a wonderful night we tight
